Gambia improves on food hygiene & safety says Modou Lamin Nget

Momodou Lamin Nget, senior Public Health Officer, who also doubles as the Project Manager for Food Hygiene and Safety Unit at the Department of State for Health, has said that The Gambia has improved on Food Hygiene and Safety (FHS).

In an exclusive interview with the Daily Observer, Mr. Nget, said unsound food exposure are given special attention under the Laws of The Gambia. Mr. Nget said they have a team that goes around to establishments to ensure that they conform to food standard and quality. Mr. Nget added that a lot of food items have been condemned in the past years.

He commended Gambians for their awareness in exposing expired foods to the concerned authorities.

He said the warning signals are sent to those people who are still dealing with expired foods, saying anybody caught by the Act will be dealt with accordingly.

He said The Gambia is yet to be blessed with a National Public Health Laboratory where suspected foods that are contaminated could be sent for bacterial analysis.

Mr. Nget, however, stated that presently about 4925 buckets of Gyma Mayonnaise and four hundred cartons of bad eggs, which got expired, were condemned and destroyed.

Mr. Nget, however, expressed dissatisfaction at stores that are being erected along the high ways, without informing DoSH for a standard hygienic requirement to be put in place before exposing them.

He warned that all those involved in food trade must ensure that they are screened against salmonialla, shiggella and other parasitic infections, as stipulated in the Food Act 2005.
