Ports crash out despite win

Gambia Ports Authority beat visiting Nigeria Nasarawa United 2-1 in the second leg, second round of the CAF Champions' League Friday.

Despite the victory, GPA were sent packing after they failed to overturn Nasarawa 3-0 win in the first leg match that eventually saw Nigerians through to the next stage on 4-2 aggregate.

Ports could have got a better result in the Friday’s game if they had kept their heads up in the first half as they did in the second interval.

However, GPA’s hope was dashed when Nasarawa first opened scores in the 46th minute with Emanuel Onuh solo effort. The Ferry Boys fought to make a come back. Their effort was rewarded when Pa Modou Jagne levelled scores moments later. In the 80th minute, Modou Jagne Sarr converted a spot-kick to make it 2-1, but this was not enough to give the hosts the much -needed victory in front of a vociferous crowd as defensive-minded Nasarawa jealously guide their goal advantage.

Speaking to Observer Sports shortly after the match, Nasarawa United Technical Adviser, Zakary Baraje, said his strategy worked well and expressed delight for advancing to the next round.

"We played a different approach in the game knowing that we have three goals in hand. We were not offensive and we were just keeping our line to stop them from scoring and fortunately our game plan worked well,” he said.
