The President of The Gambia Boxing Association, Mr Sang Correa, has revealed that the country will host Zone II boxing tournament from 4 to 8 April 2007.
In an interview with Pointsports, Mr Correa said that among the eight participating countries, five have already responded namely Sierra Leone, Senegal, Mali, Cape Verde, Guinea Conakry and the Gambia as the host. Mauritania are yet to respond.
According to GBA boss, out of the eight participating countries, the winners of the bronze, silver and gold medals will qualify for another boxing competition in Madagascar where the gold and silver medalists will qualify to take part in the All Africa Games to be hosted in Algiers, Algeria.
“In Africa we have seven zones and these seven zones should produce 60 places for the Olympic Games,” he said.
Mr Correa added that Cape Verde and Senegal will be coming on 1 April and the rest will come on 2 April.
He also noted that 3 April will be the medical check-up for the fitness of all the participants before the ‘fight’.
“This special event will be taking place at the buffer zone in Latrikunda. The preliminary rounds is entrance free but gates or entrance fee will be taken for the semi-finals and the finals, which will be made known to the public.”
Also speaking to Pointsports, Mr Amadou S. Kanu, Technical director Gambia Boxing Association said the Gambia is going to produce seven good boxers as they are presently under training and are all fit and hoping for medals.
“The special thing in boxing is that for every gold winner, the national anthem of that country’s winner and flag will be raised,” he said.
