Gamcel clocks 6

Neneh Macduall-Gaye, Secretary of State for Communications and Informations Technology, yesterday presided over the 6th year anniversary of the Gambia Cellular Company (Gamcel) at its headquarters on Mamadi Manjang Highway near Westfield.

Speaking at the ceremony, SoS Macdouall-Gaye expressed delight to be associated with Gamcel’s sixth year’s celebration of existence which coincided with the commemoration of the birthday of President Alhaji Dr. Yahya AJJ Jammeh.

She added that the establishment of GAMCEL was an initiative of President Jammeh at a time when the cellular boom was critical to any nation’s development and through his efforts, GAMCEL was established as the first cellular company in the Gambia. "I am aware, GAMCEL started with provision mobile services in May 2001.

Today we are witnessing the celebration of six years of its operation. GAMCEL as a subsidiary of GAMTEL, my Department of state has been keenly observing the trends of development of this GSM company. It is gratifying to note that the company grew from a customer base of 15,000 subscribers during its first year of inception to 240,000 subscribers as we celebrate with you today", She said.

For his part Foday Ceesay, General Manager of GAMCEL, said that Gamcel is uniquely privileged to share this great day with President Jammeh and seize the opportunity on behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and staff of Gamcel and his own behalf, to wish President Jammeh, a happy and peaceful birthday celebration with good health and long life. He prayed that Allah’s blessings be on to President Jammeh and the Gambian people.

Mr. Ceesay then emphasized the goals of Gamcel saying it is aimed at getting people from all walks of life to talking and interacting in their daily lives and business endeavours making quality and affordable communications the order of the day. “Gamcel is tune with the rest of the digital world, bridging the digital divide in many ways” he revealed.

Mr. Ceesay then assured that GAMCEL will continue to be at the forefront for the development of GSM Services in the Gambia, through close collaboration with partners, customers and the government of the Republic of The Gambia.
