Scorpions left for Cape Verde Yesterday with three instrumental players in the persons of Edrissa Sonko, Lamin Conateh, Abdoulie Corr, missing in the squad, Observer Sports can reveal.
Observer Sports has confirmed that a knee injury has forced the Swedish-based defender, Conateh, to the sideline, while Abdoulie Corr’s trip to Banjul to join the Scorpions camp was paralysed due to an expired passport. Edrissa Sonko could not also make the trip owing to the two yellow cards under his belt.
The trio was very much pivotal when the Scorpions forced Syli Nationales of Guinea to a dramatic 2-2 draw two weeks back.
However, the trio’s absence may not necessarily hamper the Scorpions do-or-die mission-thanks to the presence of the Russian-based defender, Abdou Jammeh, the Peruvian-based player, Yankuba Ceesay and Mustapha Jarju, one of the best midfielders of recent time.
Abdou Jammeh is set to make his long return after the expiry of his two-match suspension credited to a red card he collected during Gambia-Algeria match earlier this year.
The Gambia, under the captaincy of Ebou Sillah, is going for a make-or-break encounter on Saturday, June 16, against Cape Verde in Ghana 2008 Nations Cup qualifier.
The Scorpions will undisputedly need the whole three points and hope that current leaders, Algeria, share points with Guinea to keep their first-ever Nations Cup dream alive.
