THE DAY REPLAYED - Poland produced a stunning upset in the first match of Canada 2007 as they beat one of the pre-tournament favourites Brazil 1-0 on an opening day where holders Argentina played out one of three draws. Argentina were held to a stalemate by the Czech Republic in Ottawa, where fellow Group E contenders Korea DPR and Panama were also goalless, while Korea Republic came from a goal down to draw 1-1 with USA.
In Group D, Poland and Brazil kicked off the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Montreal, where a passionate, predominately Polish crowd practically raised the roof of the Olympic Stadium when Grzegorz Krychowiak put them ahead in the 23rd minute with a fabulous curling free-kick. The Poles appeared to be up against it following the sending off of Krzysztof Krol, who left the field in tears after receiving his second yellow card inside the first half hour.
However, try as four-time champions Brazil might to get back into the match, Poland were resolute and they held on for a famous victory. Alexandre Pato had two of Brazil's better opportunities, forcing a good first half save from Bartosz Bialkowski and then blasting the ball wide after being intelligently released by Renato Augusto with 17 minutes remaining.
