Sainey appeared in court yesterday, charged with negligent driving which resulted in one Alagie Masanneh Conteh suffering a fractured leg. He landed himself in trouble after changing his plea from not guilty to guilty within seconds of his appearance in court.
At first, he pleaded not guilty and was granted bail at the sum of D10, 000. But a few minutes later, he charged his plea from not guilty to guilty and informed the court of the fact that he was to return to Germany today, Tuesday.
He said, “I am now pleading guilty”, and revealed that the victim had earlier told the police that he did not want the case to come to court.
But the magistrate in his response to the claim told him that in that situation, the victim Alagie Masanneh Conteh had to write formally to the court. At that juncture, the accused started arguing with the magistrate, prompting the magistrate to revoke his bail and give an order for him to be remanded until the July, 5 2007.
Corporal 265 Trawally represented the IGP in the trial.
