61 of 114 Wards Confirmed as Arenas of Contest

The campaign for Local Government elections is to kick off today, ahead of the elections for which only 61 wards out of 114 are set to be contested across the country, the remaining 53 wards being without any opposition challenge.

The main opposition party, United Democratic Party (UDP) led by Lawyer Ousainou Darboe, registered 29 candidates; National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) led by a renowned Sociologist, Halifa Sallah, registered four candidates; National Reconciliation Party (NRP) led by Hamat Bah registered 11 candidates. Up to 21 independent candidates have also entered the race.

The ruling APRC, which fielded candidates in all the 114 wards, is already assured of victory in the 53 wards which the opposition parties have not registered candidates.

The mayoral elections for Banjul City Council and the Kanifing municipality will be contested by the ruling APRC and the opposition UDP.
