Thursday, February 14, 2008

The Gambia Cricket Association will host the Sussex Over 50’s, a visiting team from the United Kingdom, who will be in Banjul to play series of Cricket matches and conduct Coaching Clinics for primary and senior secondary schools in Banjul and the Kanifing Municipality.

However, according to information received from The Gambia Cricket Association, the team will be in the country from the 15th to the 26th of February 2008.

Johnny Gomez, Vice president of the Gambia Cricket Association and programme coordinator, said the Sussex Over 50’s visit to The Gambia is a great boost to the association in their quest to sustain the game in the country.

He said the number of players and visitors for the tour party is expected to be thirty-four, adding that some of them will be visiting the country for the first time and will be staying at the Kombo Beach Hotel.

He said matches will be held at the MRC Cricket grounds on the 17th and 19th of February and at the July 22nd Square on the 29th and 24th February.

“These cricket matches will help to prepare the national team for tournaments in April 2008. The national team will be in Nigeria for the North-West Africa Cricket Championship from the 1st to the 12th of April 2008. They will then proceed to South Africa for the ICC-ACA World Cricket League division 3 qualifiers from the 13th –18th of April 2008,” he explained.

As part of the visit, primary and senior secondary school clinics will be held at the July 22nd Square in Banjul on Thursday and Friday the 21st and 23rd of February 2008.

All primary schools in Banjul and ten Secondary schools will participate.
