The annual zonal football championship tournament kicked off last night with Serekunda East vanquishing Bakau by a 2-1 scoreline in one of the opening fixtures played at the Serekunda East mini-stadium.

The Serekunda East side came from behind to snatch the three points, thanks to Sainey Touray’s two goals - one in each half. Elsewhere, Ebrima Sonko’s late goal in the 78th minute of the match enabled the Serrekunda West side to defeat Lamin by 1-0 to level with the East side in Group B.

The two sides engaged in a see-saw competition in the early minutes of the match. But Lamin were left dumb-founded when Serrekunda West snatch Ed the opener in the dying minutes.

In another opening fixture last night, the defending champions, Sukuta secured an emphatic win over Gunjur in an exciting Group A match played at the Brikama mini-stadium. The 2-1 victory put Sukuta on top of Group A.

The next fixture in the tourney takes place on Tuesday, November 28, when the Brikama side takes on Banjul at the Brikama mini-stadium.
