On Saturday, the Blue Boys of Wallidan FC have taken a good step in their chase of the league title by increasing their lead on the top of the table.
In the battle at the top of the table against second spot holders, GPA, the Blue Boys of Wallidan came out victorious with a 1-0 win.
Pa Modou Ngum alias Base was on the score sheet again when he fired Wallidan on the lead in the 43rd minute, putting his goals record at 8 in 8 games in a raw.
In a well attended game played at the Banjul Mini Stadium in Banjul on Saturday, it was the Water Boys of GPA who first launched attacks on Wallidan defense and missed a clear chance in the 10th minute through Pa Modou Jagne, who headed a good cross from Sanna Nyassi.
Wallidan reacted immediately with a well combined counter attack in the 24th minute but Amadou Gaye headed out of target.
From there Wallidan dominated the game but faced a strong GPA defense led by Mandou Bojang and Alagie Fatajo. But their domination was rewarded just two minutes before the break when the leading goal score of the league, Pa Modou Ngum received a good past from Amadou Gaye in GPA 18 yard box and released a turn- kick for a goal to Wallidan.
GPA tried to come back in the last minute of the first half but Wallidan defense watched carefully.
The same scenario occurred in the second with Wallidan opting to consolidate their lead and used counter attack trying to upset their opponent.
GPA coach, Alhagie Sarr went out for the equalizer by introducing Alhagie Musa Kamara and Abdurrahman Damp at the same time but Coach Foday Bah countered his option by bringing Sainey Touray alias Ballack for the goal scorer Pa Modou Ngum.
The best equalising chance for GPA occurred in the 68th when Aji Tunkara missed a clear chance following a misunderstanding between Wallidan defenders.
As the match closed to the end, tension mounted between players on the pitch resulting to several yellow cards and the expulsion of Amadou Gaye of Wallidan for second boockable offense in the 85th minute.
Despite one man down, Wallidan were able to contain GPA up to the final whistle.
Wallidan now lead the table with 18 points in 9 matches follow by Gamtel with 15 points in 9 outings. On Saturday the Telecommunications boys defeated Sait Matty/ Africell 1-0 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau.
GPA, with 14 points in 8 matches are third on the table. They have a match in hand against Armed Forces on Tuesday May 8, 2007.
In the other game of Week Nine, Armed Forces defeated Hawks 1-0 at the Serekunda West on Saturday.
At press time yesterday Bakau United were locking horn with Seaview in Serekunda East while Real De Banjul were battling with Steve Biko at the Independence Stadium.
