Ndow’s Comprehensive High, Stage Another Career Day

Tuesday, February 19, 2008

On  Wednesday February 13, Ndow’s Comprehensive School staged yet another career day. The event was initiated at least eight years ago and has successfully been kept going on an annual basis. It has been established to give an opportunity for students to gain an insight into varied professions and to help them consider possible careers for the future. It is considered by the school Authorities that as students prepare to pass out from High school and secondary education, nothing could be more relevant and important than exposing high school graduating students to the next step in life: this will be either taking up employment, or embarking on further education at a tertiary institution. According to the Chairperson of the occasion, Mrs. Patience Sonko – Godwin, “there is a gamut of careers to choose from but it is imperative that we choose the right one that would help us satisfy not only one’s personal needs but also contribute to national development”.

In that vein and in line with that ideology, speakers and resource people were invited to make presentations on selected employment areas including Accountancy (Mr. Clifford Johnson of Ndow’s Comprehensive Accounts Office), Nursing (Ms Binta Bah of Gambia School of Nursing and Midwifery), Law (Magistrate Sagarr Jahateh of the Gambian Judiciary), Tertiary Education( Mr Charles Thomas, Counsellor at Ndow’s Comprehensive) and Human Rights (Mr Harry Stevens of the African Commission for Human and Peoples Rights). Following individual presentations students asked questions designed to explain or clarify employment areas of interest to them.

Speaking earlier, the Acting Principal of the School Ms Florence Ampong, had made the relevant comment that “a day like this is vital for students who do not otherwise have the opportunity to obtain this type of orientation, at home or at school, to make informed choices of careers”. At the end of the occasion, the Deputy Head Girl, Madeleine Ashcroft, gave the vote of thanks giving high praise to the speakers for their enlightening speeches, to the school authorities for their useful initiative in organizing such events, and her fellow students for their participation.

The occasioned was chaired by Mrs. Patience Sonko- Godwin a renowned history scholar and a member of the school’s Board of Trustees, and graced by the founder and proprietress of the school, Mrs. Harriet M. Ndow, and some Board Members Mrs. Sainabou Lowe and Mr. Valdiodio Ndiaye.
