Students of Muslim Senior Secondary School in Banjul, on Monday, February 12, gathered at the school premises to protest at the refusal of teachers to teach.

Speaking to Daily Observer, shortly after the incident, the students said that they have endured enough of such behaviours from their teachers.

Mariam Muhammed, Head girl of Muslim Senior Secondary School told the Daily Observer that the situation was unbearable. “We have to do all we can to put an immediate end to this situation,” she fumed.

Another student, Kebba Sanyang, complained that they have not covered any of the practical areas in the science and Agricultural subjects. He then added: “We have not finished any of the science practical which carries about 80 per cent of marks. This means that we are not going to make it in the final exams,” he stated.

However, one Mr. Koroma, Head of the Agriculture Department at the Muslim Senior Secondary School, said the situation has been amicably resolved, assuring that they will ensure that lessons are carried out as usual.

“Everything is now under control. We will continue our normal classes and try to cover our syllabus,” he reiterated. Contacted on the incident, Sulayman Bun Njie, Principal of Muslim Senior Secondary School, said the students’ protest was caused by the late payment of some teachers in the school.

Teachers were entitled to gratuity, which was paid late. They could not have the patience, because efforts were being made to settle them.”
