50-Year-Old Woman Gets Three Months

The Banjul Magistrates’ Court last Monday handed down a three-month jail term to a 50-year-old woman for concealment. She was also left with an option of D1,500 court fine.

Mariam Joof was found guilty of concealing the birth of her daughter’s baby.

In passing down his judgement, magistrate B.Y. Camara pointed out that the convict should be made to pay for her sin as a signal to forestall similar occurrences.

According to the venerable magistrate, it would amount to sending a wrong signal to the wider public if Joof was allowed to go scot-free. He pointed out that the crime committed is a serious one and must be punished commensurately.

He however pointed out that, he would put into consideration the time the convict spent in state custody as well as her comportment in the course of police investigations.
