Assembly hits at Senegal

Members of the National Assembly have added their voice to concerns over reports of attempts by some Gambian dissidents abroad to destabilise The Gambia with support from the Senegalese authorities.

The story was featured in two publications of the Daily Observer  under the caption ‘Gambian dissidents re-group in Senegal ‘ and ‘Senegal continues to destabilise The Gambia’.

The matter was raised by the Member for Foni Kansala, Abba Sanyang, during the adjournment debate last Thursday. He described the report as disturbing and one which should not be taken lightly. According to him, Gambians are fond of taking issues affecting their lives lightly, which should cease. “This [report] affects our lives. So, what do we do about the matter? Are we taking the story for granted?” he asked.

He stated that Cassamance rebels are moving into The Gambia with the collaboration of Gambians. “I don’t know why Gambians are so selfish with all the developments taking place under President Jammeh”, he said.

The Foni Kansala NAM then challenged Gambians never to allow outside dictation.

Cherno Cham, Member for Lower Niumi, said the report has created panic among the people but again provides valuable information concerning the security of the nation. He challenged the International Community to act swiftly to curb the menace.

Honourable Cham then suggested a massive sensitisation of the people of The Gambia on the matter. “At the village levels, the security should not take it for granted. At the weekly markets [Lumos], there should be security as penetration can occur”, he said.

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Fatoumatta Jahumpa-Ceesay,   said the two nations share a lot but added: “If any nation thinks it can bring down the Gambia, it is a mere dream”.

She urged the Foreign Affairs Select Committee of the National Assembly to look into the matter to ensure that the peace President Jammeh has nurtured in The Gambia and the sub-region is maintained at all times. “President Jammeh is a peace maker and we should not allow anyone to destabilise this nation”, she said.
