Residents of Brikama-ba and the satellite villages have commended the officials of the Janjanbureh Area Council and security officers in the way and manner in which they operate the weekly market (Lumo) in Brikama-ba.
In an interview with the Daily Observer, Mrs. Mariama Jallow, a prominent restaurant operator highlighted on some of the achievements made in the past 17 years, citing that through the efforts she was able to buy a compound, pay school fees for her children, among other things. She then commended the Lumo Committee, Area Council officials and the security officers for their commitment in providing people with tents to enable them sell their commodities.
Kekuta Ceesay, Vice Chairman of Janjanbureh Area Council, said the council depends on the collection of rates, which they plough back to every community in a form of development.
He pointed out that from last year to date; the Janjanbureh Area Council had brought a lot of development programmes in the community, such as construction of Bansang waiting tents, Bansang Car Park, Brikama-ba toilets for school children.
Matty Mbye, a prominent business woman who sells market vegetables stated that for the past 18 years, she has been selling in the Lumo, describing it as successful.
She urged her fellow women to engage themselves in such activities, adding that their husbands cannot do everything for them.
Bocarr Barry, a Senegalese businessman in The Gambia said: “Compared to our Lumos in Senegal, The Gambia is the best. We are not also disturbed by any security personnel,’ he said.
Brikama-ba Lumoo (weekly market), is one of the most popular Lumos in Central River Region, which brings together people of different countries, tribes, culture and religious affiliations in the exchange of goods and services.
