Seven Nigerians to be tried

Thursday, January 31, 2008

All things held constant, seven Nigerian nationals should be tried for drug charges but the seven have been languishing in the remand wing of the State Central Prison without any progress in their case.

The seven suspects were on Wednesday brought to the Brikama Magistrates’ Court in Western Region but were subsequently returned to the central prison in Banjul following yet another adjournment of their case.

Ogbozo Malchy, Samuel Nwaiwo, Edeh Banke Anthony, Clement Ifeanyi Obiorah, James Nicholas and Okafor Francis Phule were apprehended at the Banjul International Airport last year whilst allegedly attempting to smuggle cocaine out of the country.

On Wednesday, the Brikama Magistrates’ Court, chaired by Edrissa Mbai, was informed by Abdoulie Ceesay of the National Drug Enforcement Agency that the prosecution witness was in the southern troubled Sudanese region of Darfur. The counsels for the five accused persons were not also in court and as such, the case was adjourned to Thursday for continuation.
