Siblings convicted

Magistrate E.F M’Bai of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court last Tuesday convicted and fined two accused persons: James Mendy and Ebou Mendy, to a sum of D200 each, in default to serve one year-jail term.

This verdict was handed down after the duo was found guilty of not only assaulting one Pa S. Camara on July 11th , 2007, at Daranka village, and assualting a Police Officer in due execution of his duties.

According to the statement, the duo were said to have jointly assaulted the complainant, Pa. S. Camara, by slapping him on the face. Count two also disclosed that the two on the some day assaulted 1st class 2023 Ebrima Jallow, by scolding him on the neck.

While he was delivering the sentence, Presiding Magistrate M’Bai told the court that he has no doubt that the convicts are young persons and first- time offenders. “However notwithstandingly the offence in which they are found guilty is serious,” he pointed out.

He then fined them each D200, on count one, in default to serve one year-jail term. On count two, the second convict, Ebou Mendy, is fined D 3000 (for he was said to be the one who actually scolded the Police Officer), in default to serve one year in prison.

In addition, Magistrate M’Bai ruled that each of the convicts should compensate the complainant the sum of D1000, in default to serve further six months. The two sentences will run consecutively.
