Augustus Prom, Proprietor of Augustus Prom Chartared Accounting Firm, yesterday testified in the on-going D4 million theft case involving Alieu Mamar Njie, former Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council, presided over by Principal Magistrate Moses Richards of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.
Mr Prom told the court that he had been conducting audit exercise, for the Gambia Scout Association free of charge for a decade and it was during this period that he knew Mr Njie. Mr Prom said that at the end of the 2006 audit exercise, he had issued audit certificates and management letters to the Board of the Commissioner of the scout association, covering the period 2003 to 2005.
According to him, after completion of his task, unsigned copies of the audit report was sent to the Board to enable them answer to certain queries on the report, but to no avail. He added that the report was later signed by Mr Njie and the Treasurer of the association in the presence of the Police, covering the period 2003 to 2004. “The accused refused to sign the 2005 audit report. Only Gibril signed on behalf of the Board of Commissioners of the Scout Association.” Mr Prom told the court
When asked whether he knew why the accused refused to sign the 2005 audit report, Mr Prom said he has enquired from him [Mr Njie], but he did not advance any reason for his refusal. He reiterated that the significance of the signing of the audit report is to admit responsibility of the outcome of the audit report.
He finally indicated that the report did not implicate the accused for allegedly stealing D4M.
