Man sentenced for three years

Ousman Conteh of Old Jeshwang was yesterday convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment with hard labour by Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.

Mr Conteh was found guilty of stealing, contrary to section 252 of the Criminal Code, Laws of The Gambia.
He was dragged to court for stealing four T-shirts, valued at D1, 200, a pair of shoes valued at, D1, 500, a pair of  trousers valued at D300, and a cash amount of D790, said to be the property of Francis Mendy.

According to the facts of the case, the accused Mr. Conteh on 2 May 2007, entered the house of the complainant who forgetfully left his door open and stole the items.
The facts stated that an eye-witness Abdoulie Bass who saw the accused reported him to the complainant.  A searched was conducted and Mr. Conteh was later arrested and taking to the Kanifing Police Station.
In his plea, Mr. Conteh told the court to forgive him.  “I swear I will never do stealing again”, he told the court.

Magistrate Jammeh then sentenced Ousman Conteh to three years in jail with hard labour.
