Thursday, June 21, 2007

The University of The Gambia has been transformed into a full fledged University by offering its first postgraduate field of study in African History.

This is the first Masters Programme ever to be offered by The Gambia’s young, constantly growing and developing university.

According to a press release from the UTG, Monday, June 11, 2007, was a day that will be recorded in the history of the University of The Gambia and the nation.

According to Professor Nicodemus Awasom, Chair of Educations and Exams and African History Lecturer, Pioneer and Coordinator of the programme, starting the programme was not an easy task.

The release added that Friday, June 15, 2007 was the first inaugural meeting of the MS programme held at UTG’s Administration Building with Professor Andreas Steigen, Vice-Chancellor of UTG in attendance and Professor Awasom.

According to the report, to date, there are twelve students in the programme, including one female. “The students are from many walks of life that range from civil servants to private industry. One thing they all have in common is that they are all graduates of the UTG. The lecturers that have been assembled for the programme are notable in their professions and bring in many teaching aspects to the course, including philosophy, genetics and historiography,” the release stated.

Welcoming the students, Professor Andreas Steigen, Vice-Chancellor of UTG, noted that this undertaking makes them pioneers and that though it sounds nice to be a pioneer it is not always nice or easy. He reminded them that new beginnings face many obstacles and challenges.

The Vice-Chancellor further stated that this class is preparing the way for future generations and pointed out to students the importance of learning true African History and telling what they learn to others. He encouraged the students to stay focused, study hard and to work together to overcome obstacles and be successful. He also encouraged the students to come forward with any problems or questions they may have in order to have assistance and to be better than average, and to be their best.
