Scorpions Move to Camp

Friday, June 1, 2007

The Gambia National Squad, better known as the Scorpions, has moved to camp last evening ahead of their crucial away game in Conakry on Sunday.

The team, comprising of foreign and home based players, is currently in camp at the Paradise Suites Hotel in Kololi.

Since Monday the team is undergoing intensive training sessions under the surveillance of their new Spanish coach, Martinez.

To prepare Sunday Do-or-Die game in Conakry, coach Martinez started his preparation with the home based players and were later joined by some foreign based players in the likes of Assan Jatta alias Bierrhoff of Belgium, Kamal Ndaw of Chyprus, Modou Jagne and Pa Saihou Kujabi from Austria.

Vice Captain Ebou Sillah and Edrissa Sonko were expected to join the team in camp yesterday evening.

The team is expected to leave Banjul on Saturday for Conakry, where a tough game is awaiting them against the Sily National of Guinea on Sunday June 3rd, 2007.

It could be recalled that the Gambia Senior team registered a humiliating result on March 24 at home when they were beaten 2-0 by Sily National of Guinea.

They would regain their chances of qualifying for their first even African Nations Cup finals, if they managed to collect the three points at the 28 September Stadium in Conakry on Sunday.

A mission that seems to be very difficult as Guinea has a good record at home. Their last defeat at home was registered in 2003 when the Incompatibles Lions of Cameroon beat them in front of their own crowd.
