In a bid to contribute to the education sector in The Gambia, Phil Della Madge and some other friends in UK through their Gambian friend, Yaya Conteh on Thursday inaugurated a new library and a toilet facility at Makumbaya Lower Basic School at a ceremony held at the school grounds in Makumbaya.
According to Phil Della Madge, head of the delegation from the UK, the project came as a result of their visits to The Gambia. He said during these visits, his Gambian based friend approached them to assist Makumbaya Lower Basic School with library and some additional toilets.
Mr Madge informed the gathering of their willingness to transform Makumbaya Lower Basic School into a modern learning centre, adding that his colleagues are ready to embark on activities to raise funds to develop the school.
Mustapha Jarju, deputy headmaster of the school said the project came at an appropriate time. He described the initiative as a worthy venture that will not only help the students of the school but will create avenues for other students from the community to learn and make research.
Speaking on behalf of the parents and the community, Alfusaine Ceesay, chairman of the parent teachers association, thanked the donors for their move. According to him, President Jammeh has put education high on his government’s agenda.
Mass E Cham, headmaster of Makumbaya Lower Basic School spoke about their efforts to improve the academic standard of the school. He said since the establishment of the school in 1980, it has produced lots of students, some of whom are heads of institutions today.
He noted that the library will greatly help the students to develop their skills in researching. Mr Cham thanked the donors for their support and assured them that the facility will be utilised effectively.
The inauguration ceremony was punctuated by entertainment and a football match.
