Journalist’s Trial Deferred

Monday, October 2, 2006
The trial of The Independent reporter, Lamin Fatty, has been deferred to the 9th October 2006. The case, which resumed last Wednesday before Magistrate Kebba Sanyang of the Kanifing Magistrates Court, could not proceed as the defence counsel, Lawyer Camara, was said to have travelled out of the jurisdiction. Lawyer Camara’s clerk informed the court that he was sent by his boss to inform the court that he had travelled out of the jurisdiction and to appeal to the court for the case to be adjourned to the 9th October 2006, when Lawyer Camara is expected to return to the jurisdiction. Lamin Fatty, a reporter with The Independent, has been standing trial for the alleged offence of publishing and broadcasting an article which the state considered to be false and malicious.
