Detective Corporal 1696, Salifu M Nyang, attached to the Kairaba Police Station, last Wednesday testified in the on-going American Embassy fuel theft case involving six of their staff.
The accused persons: Kabba Bojang, Edrissa Sanyang, Bakary Sowe, Lamin Gibba, Omar Jagne and Lamin P Jammeh reappeared before Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Kanifing Magistrates’ Court.
In his testimony, Cpl Nyang told the court that Ben Wilson, Chief Security Officer at the US Embassy, in The Gambia, reported a fuel theft case, which occurred at the Embassy’s warehouse, Kanifing Industrial Estate. He added that the matter was forwarded to the CID Office, together with the six suspects.
According to him, upon receiving the file they interrogated the accused persons, who denied any involvement in the alleged theft. He said they further conducted a search in their houses and the scene of the offence, but nothing was found at both places. He noted that they mounted further investigations and later found out that Lamin Gibba and Edirisa Sanyang, who were on duty on the day in question knew something about the theft and were reluctant to inform the authorities at the Embassy. Subsequently, they were arrested and charged for the alleged offence.
