IGP Issues Statement

The Office of the Inspector General of Police yesterday issued a press release updating the general public on the death of a youth that occurred in London Corner on Wednesday night.

According to the release, a security task force was responding to a tip-off that some youths in London Corner were smoking cannabis sativa on a certain street in London Corner.

“These youths have also been accused of robbery and provoking passers-by. Upon arrival at the scene, the Police arrested 12 people with bundles of suspected cannabis, and other group members started running. In pursuance, one of the suspects, Sheriff Minteh, fell on an iron stake sustaining injury on his groin. He was rushed to Serrekunda Health Centre and later Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital where he was pronounced dead,” the release stated.

The police say they are investigating the matter in collaboration with sister security agencies and, therefore, urged the greater Gambian public to be calm and stay away from any conduct that would hinder the ‘investigation.’

The release assured that there was no cause for panic as the situation was under control.
