Following his Marriage to a Second Wife
Mamy Camara, the first wife of the Senegalese music icon, Youssou Ndour, has sued for formal divorce in protest at Youssou Ndour’s marriage to a second wife, The Point can confirm.
The couple, accompanied by their lawyers, last Thursday appeared before the president of the Department court of Dakar, Mr. Dawo Diouf. The couple was summoned by the judge after a request by Youssou Ndour for the matter concerning divorce with his wife to be pronounced.
During the proceedings, the complainant’s (Mamy Camara’s) lawyer demanded that the case be assigned to another court, saying that the presiding judge was a close relative of Mamy Camara’s.
The judge thus heeded the request and transferred the case to another department court.
However, our sources reveal that the court is nevertheless presently engaged in negotiations to bring about reconciliation between the couple. Should the efforts to reconcile the two fail, our sources continue, the court would have to determine who among the parents would keep the children.
In the event the complainant wins the case, the court would then determine how much allowance Youssou Ndour would give Mamy Camara every month.
Meanwhile Ousman Seye, Youssou Ndour’s Lawyer, has refuted Mamy Camara’s claim of close relationship with the Dakar court judge, saying it is a ploy to delay the case.
Youssou Ndour has not yet reacted to the transfer of the case but is set for divorce.
