The National Alliance for Democracy and Development (NADD) executive has written to the Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) stating that Mr. Lamin Touray, alias Chali, was not authorised to speak on behalf on the party. The move by the NADD executive came in the wake of a television news broadcast on Sunday 13th January, in which Mr. Modou Lamin Touray was reported to be representing NADD at a political rally. The information elicited sharp reaction from the NADD executive, who described it as “inaccurate” and demanded that it “be retracted.”
Mr. Touray, according to the letter from the party, has formed his own independent group and has been asked by the NADD executive to declare that his activities are personal initiatives and not authorised by them. “If political parties want an alliance they know how to go about getting it with negotiations and formal agreements which are written and announced for public notice,” the letter added.
The NADD executive went on to urge the general public to take note of the fact that no political party has approached NADD for any consultations regarding participation in the Local Government elections and that only NADD activists in Wuli have been coming up with candidates for sponsorship under the NADD umbrella.
The NADD executive expressed the view that the electorate knows whether the Local Government elections are significant or not and that as such they should vote for the party and independent candidates of their choice irrespective of whether that candidate is endorsed by NADD or not.
“NADD does not want to be a political factor where it does not have a candidate and has sought the endorsement of any party where it has a candidate,” the letter states. It adds that the party is of the view that the most the party could achieve in this election is to test its strength among the electorate.
In conclusion the letter calls on Mr. Touray to inform the public that his appearance on political platforms is in a personal capacity and not on behalf on NADD. It denounces anyone claiming to speak on its behalf in the Kanifing municipality.
