Limited Time Means New Coach Must Work with Locals

The 2008 Gambia Football Association national league is progressing well with lots of interesting matches.

The game between Wallidan and Steve Biko FC featured very interesting performances with good football being played at the Independence Stadium in Bakau. Wallidan won by a goal to nil.

Pa Seedy Sey, a football fan who once stopped watching Gambia league, said, “I am really impressed with the teams now as they play good football. I think the players are now beginning to realize the interest in football. We have good young talented players who love the game and are ready to play.” Mr. Sey said that his main concern is that the teams should take responsibility of their players.  “The teams should have their own offices where people can reach them and they should organize and have their own training grounds”. He said if football rises in The Gambia then the teams must be well organised. Pa Seedy said that players should be motivated by their teams and given encouragement, adding that the FA alone could not do it but with the help of the teams and the private sector Gambian football will progress. The only problem is that the FA needs to put everything in place like appointing a caretaker coach who will take care of our national team before the foreign coach arrives. “I mean a professional coach that can take care of our football, we need to start now we are always late in preparation, we have good young hungry players let’s motivate them if we do, we will have our goals. Mr. Sey mentioned that even employing a coach he must work with our local coaches now because they know the players better than him at the moment. “We need to start with our home based players and coaches to do the job”. He stated.

Meanwhile in the GFA week two league fixtures on Saturday 1st of March 2008, Samger register another victory after beating Armed forces by a goal nil at the Sere Kunda East Mini Stadium. This gives them 6 points. Real de Banjul registered their first win of the season by beating Africell Sait Matty 1-0 at the Sere Kunda West Mini Stadium. They drew1-1 with Gamtel in their opening game at the West Mini Stadium.
