Alleged NIA Murderers’ Case Drags On

Tuesday, February 5, 2008

There appears to be no end in sight to the trial of two brothers on suspicion of killing an agent of the National Intelligence Agency.

The brothers, Victor Gomez and John Gomez, were arrested by the police in Gambia and charged with the murder of Habib Gibba, an agent of NIA. The alleged murder occurred in 2004 at Dirima Kolong; a suburb of Brikama.

However, the two brothers have since been remanded at the remand wing of the State Central Prison for almost four years without any impressive progress in their trial.

It will be recalled that the duo was initially charged at the Brikama High Court but due to locomotion and other logistical challenges, their case was transferred to the High Court in Banjul only to be subsequently referred to Brikama High Court.

On January 25th , Victor and John were brought to court for the continuation of their trial but the suspects and some of their family members were once again disappointed when the court was informed that defense counsels Borry Touray and Edu Gomez could not make it to the court for the continuation of the case. The trial judge, Ngui Mboob-Janneh, and State Prosecutor, Merly Wood, were though present in court.

The accused were consequently taken back to Mile II until the resumption of the case later this month.
