Friday, August 24, 2007

This paper has confirmed from the Police Public Relations officer the arrest and subsequent detention of the acting Mayor of Kanifing Municipal Council, Mr. Alieu Mommar Njie, barely 24 hours before being released on bail.

According to reliable sources, Mr. Njie was picked up on Tuesday after working hours, but the source did not give any further information regarding his arrest.

“I think it is the police who are in the better position to tell you the reasons for his arrest,” said our source.

On the other hand, the police PRO, Inspector Secka, also confirmed the arrest of Mr. Njie, but he too declined to give any details regarding his arrest, as according to him the matter is still under investigations. Meanwhile other informed sources told this Paper that Mr. Njie was questioned in connection with funds of the Gambia Boy Scouts Association.

It could be recalled that Mr. Njie was appointed Acting Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council on the 16th of April, following the removal of the former holder of the position, Mr. Francis Gomez.

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Njie was the IEC commissioner in charge of Upper River Region (URR). He is also the chief scout commissioner in The Gambia.
