New Charges Loom for Lt. Camara

Thursday, March 6, 2008
Inspector Touray, prosecuting officer in the case of Lt. Bakary Camara, former presidential bodyguard, revealed before Magistrate Kayode that the prosecution had just received a new charge from the Attorney General’s Chambers against Lt. Camara.

Inspector Touray further revealed that knowing the case against Manlafi Sanyang, former government vehicle controller at state House, and the Italian national Demonico Fedeli, are set for that day, the prosecution would like to consolidate the charges. He said the prosecution was not aware that the accused had fulfilled the bail condition granted to him by the court. He stated that the accused is in remand and applied for the case to be adjourned.

Defence counsel, Lawyer Camara, for his part objected to the prosecution application for adjournment of the matter, adding that the prosecution did not advance any good reason for the application. He said his client was taken to remand the very day he was granted court bail in violation of the court order.

Magistrate Kayode said the prosecution had known that the accused was before the court and was granted bail.

It will be recalled that the accused, Lt. Bakary Camara, was standing trial before Magistrate Kayode of the Banjul Magistrates’ Court on three counts of stealing and giving false information to a public officer contrary to section 252 and 114 of the Criminal Code respectively.

He is to appear in court today.
